Simply put community supported agriculture (CSA)is a partnership between community residents and a regional farm. The farmer receives advanced payments that help meet the costs of planting and harvesting and members receive fresh, local, and high quality produce. Likewise, an investment in the farm means that members also share in the risks, such as bad weather that may affect the harvest.
CSA’s have become very successful and are growing rapidly throughout the boroughs. Brooklyn CSAs can be found in Sunset Park, Carroll Gardens, Flatbush, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Dumbo, Park Slope, Cobble Hill and many other neighborhoods. There are 80 operational CSAs throughout NYC and 20 startups in the works.
