Rogowski Farm Trip
On June 9th, we made the trek to the Rogowski Farm in Pine Island, New York.  We straggled in to the barn by twos, threes and four or more, and each group joined those already enjoying their oatmeal banana pancakes, omelets and orange juice.  We headed out to the fields to participate in the “certified naturally grown” certification process.  We were busy learning about planting, soil testing and how the farm controls pests.  Meanwhile, the kids got busy enjoying the black mud! It was wonderful to see the new plants green and flowering between the great furrows of black dirt.  We tasted all kinds of greens, from mustard to pepper grass and quelites.

Cheryl and her crew were wonderful, knowledgeable and engaging, not to mention dedicated, making us feel lucky indeed to be linked up with Rogowski Farm.

New Egg Farmer — Porter Ridge Farm
The Yellow Hook CSA is very happy to announce that we have partnered with Porter Ridge Farm for the 2012 season. Caroline and Josh have a flock in pasture in Hebron, NY. They allow the flock to free range in the woods outside their pasture almost every day, and feed a locally raised layer mash with no hormone, and no antibiotics. The chickens have access to grass and bugs and are given lots of treats like squash and pumpkins. Eggs from chickens that have access to grass and bugs lay eggs that are rich in Omega 3’s, have less bad cholesterol and more good cholesterol, contain CLA (conjugated linoleic acid a cancer preventer) and more vitamin D.
